Increase in beer sales

Berlin (dpa) - Increased beer consumption abroad, a warm summer at home and thirsty football fans at the 2016 European Championship have boosted the sales of Germany's favourite alcoholic drink amid years of stagnating consumption at home.

Sales of lager, ales and beer-based beverages increased by 0.1 per cent to 95.8 million hectolitres in 2016, Germany's federal statistics office revealed on Monday.

As the German population ages, people have been drinking less, leading to a stagnation in revenues for breweries across the country. In 2016, the trend continued, with inland sales down 0.7 per cent.

However, beer sales in countries outside the European Union increased in 2016 by almost 10 per cent, with China and the United States among the biggest markets.
