German actor David Kross selected as Shooting Star 2009

Ten young actors, including German talent David Kross, have been nominated as the “Shooting Stars” of 2009 and will be introduced at the new talent forum of the Berlin International Film Festival (Berlinale). The group of prominent young actors from across Europe were chosen from a broad list of potential candidates and will have some big shoes to fill, as previous participants include Daniel Craig, Rachel Weisz, Franka Potente and Daniel Brühl, to name but a few.

Kross was proposed by German Films and made it through to the final ten along with another nine colleagues from the group of 18 nominated actors. The jury noted that he is “A rapidly maturing talent who can express the full range of emotions from aggression to vulnerability, while always allowing the audience to emphasise with his situation on screen.”

He had provided an indication of his talent in his first role age 12 in the TV movie “Help, I'm a Boy!” (Hilfe Ich Bin Ein Junge) by Oliver Dommenget. He was cast in the multi-award winning 2006 film “Tough Enough” (Knallhart) by Detlev Buck and was discovered by a larger audience. Since then he has gone on to star in “Krabat” alongside Daniel Brühl and, most recently, in the critically acclaimed “The Reader” (Stephen Daldry, 2008). Currently he is shooting in Cambodia on Detlev Buck's new movie “Same Same but Different”.

The 2009 edition Shooting Stars will be flying the flag for European cinema in Berlin and at other festivals and showing the range of acting talent Europe can offer. The highlight of the events in Berlin will be the presentation of the Shooting Stars Awards – sponsored by Studio Babelsberg - by festival director Dieter Kosslick.

The Shooting Stars project brings the honored actors one step nearer to the international film business, and provides them with a higher profile and important contacts. Highlights in Berlin are a presentation to leading casting directors in Europe and to the international press. Moreover, European Film Promotion (EFP) offers the chosen actors further input for their international career in master classes and workshops.
