The German Bundestag – the Federal German parliament – offers the opportunity for well-qualified young people from the U.S. and central, eastern and southeastern Europe with a strong interest in politics to gain first-hand experience in Germany’s system of parliamentary government through its International Parliamentary Scholarships program. Interested persons can still apply until June 30, 2009.

The program, run by the German Bundestag in collaboration with Humboldt University in Berlin, involves 15-week placements with members of the German Bundestag. It runs from March 1 to July 31 in which time the participants are introduced to a wide variety of tasks carried out in their assigned member of parliament’s office. The participants will be actively involved in formulating speeches, articles and letters, as well as briefing papers. At the beginning of the program the three universities in Berlin provide the participants with an introduction to local academic life and to the Bundestag. The scholarship holders are registered for the summer semester at the Humboldt university in Berlin and can sign up for two classes there, or at one of the other universities in the capital.

Participating countries include: Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bosnia und Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Estonia, France, Georgia, Israel, Kazakhstan, Kosovo, Croatia, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Moldova , Montenegro, Poland, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Czech Republic, Ukraine, Hungary and USA.
