Holocaust Memorials: The Stolpersteine Controversy
January 27th is International Holocaust Remembrance Day, and memorials in Germany for holocaust victims are manifold. Since 1996 artist Gunter Demnig has installed over 43,000 personalized bronze plaques—Stoplersteine (stumbling stones)—memorializing Third Reich victims on German sidewalks. You can’t walk far on most German streets without—literally—stumbling over a reminder of what happened here. Unless you live in Munich.
